Jens Liebchen is a German photographer who lives between Tokyo and Berlin. The pictures for Tsukuba-Narita 2011/03/13 were taken on a 90 mins bus trip from Tsukuba to Narita aeroport. The images, taken from the bus, depict empty streets, buildings, residencial houses, road, gas stations. To a certain degree these are very banal pictures of everyday life. Only the date in the title of the book refers to a disaster that hit the island country. There are no signs or emotions that can tell the viewer about the catastrophe. A cloud of extra blue in the photographs and blurriness create an atmosphere. The book plays with a significance of the event, image representation and a role photography can play in telling the story. How do these photographs correlate with our visual perception of an apocalypse? Looking for a sign of a disaster we add extra meaning to closed gas stations, empty streets, a woman wearing a face mask.
