About Rémi Coignet + Nina Poppe’s Selection for 10x10 Japanese Photobooks
We have chosen recent books for this selection: some of them are still available and most of the others are easily found. Our aim was to reflect the wealth and the diversity of Japanese photobooks. Tomoko Sawada, for example, examines the status of women via a children’s book, while Takashi Homma photographs radioactive mushrooms, victims of the Fukushima catastrophe. Yuji Obata captures a mournful winter, whereas Orie Ichinhashi prefers the gentle summer. Still other photographers question the very nature of photographic representation. In all cases, the object itself is paramount. Hence, Lieko Shiga’s precious images are encased in a book as elegant as it is delicate.
