Late 70s and early 80s in New York through the lens of David Armstrong’s camera. He is associated with a group of artists known as “The Boston School” (with Nan Goldin as a central figure). They have developed an aesthetic of raw intimate portraits, highly saturated colours, snapshots of everyday life. Night and Day reflects city’s subculture of that period, which was impossibly cool, fun, wild and represented a complete freedom. Rich portraits of friends, lovers and close strangers mixed with the energy and joy of wild New York. Young faces of decade defining figures (Lou Reed, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, John Lurie, Jean-Michel Basquait, Rene Ricard, John Waters) can be seen while flipping the pages, yet the names are not important.
110 photos from 35-years old archive of thousand Kodachrome images turned into a gorgeous and personal book. A simple yet magic cover with a text scratched by René Ricard. A facsimile of Ricard’s original poem Ginger Rogers typed out in 1979 is also included in the book. Jack Pierson’s conversation with Armstrong is a fresh addition to a Night and Day story. A gorgeous book with elegant and thoughtful design, and timeless images from NY downtown scene.
